TRAINING EXPERIENCE
Presenter at Petroleum Engineering learning events within Shell EP Europe. Coaching and Mentoring junior staff within Shell for a number of years. 2 years lecturing in Mathematics and Computing at Newcastle Polytechnic

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Independent Consultant:
Established own company, PetroCTS 2008 providing independent consultancy and training services in Petrophysics. Ian is a multi-disciplinary Team Leader and Senior Petrophysicist with strong analytical abilities and key coaching and mentoring skills. He has 30 years successful experience with major operators in the Oil and Gas industry working within both Exploration and Development teams and across the full development cycle.

Senior Petrophysicist, Shell Netherlands (NAM):
Responsible for a number of subsurface assets within the UK and NL Southern North Sea with a key role in near-field Exploration activities. Co-ordinated the subsurface activities for a number of commercial Acquisition and Divestment opportunities. Worked closely with logging contractors and their management instigating and promoting a formal approach to safety within formation evaluation which was adopted across Shell EP Europe. Ensured effective application of state-of-the art Petrophysical tools and techniques on UK and NL offshore gas fields. Provided advisory services for a wide range of Petrophysical activities for Shell Group worldwide. Acted as coach and mentor to a number of junior staff.

Team Leader, Shell UK Southern North Sea Carboniferous Fields:
Managed all subsurface activities through the full field development cycle. Initiated and submitted Field Development Plans; planned and executed the drilling phase up to and beyond first production; responsible for reservoir management within a complex gas contract network; negotiated eventual field divestments. Scope covered 2 new platforms, pipelines, seismic reprocessing, and 15 new wells.

Head of Petrophysics, Shell UK Southern North Sea:
Pioneered new cutting edge technology developments in the formation evaluation of Horizontal and Under-Balance-Drilled wells to enhance data quality and reduce evaluation costs. These were successfully implemented in the profitable development of the Tight Gas plays in the SNS.

Petrophysicist, Shell UK, Aberdeen:
Designed evaluation and test programmes to ensure exploration well objectives were met. Evaluated a number of new data analysis procedures leading to recommendations on their adoption by Shell in the UK. Designed and conducted Shell’s first successful tests of FEWD tools, resulting in a position paper on their use throughout Shell.

Senior Engineer, British Gas, Newcastle:
Successfully developed 3D mathematical models of a magnetic pipeline inspection vehicle leading to its introduction into field service. Created new techniques involving Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence for the automatic interpretation of large volumes of data. Supervised full-time and part-time staff and managed contracts for farmed-out R&D work.

Research Assistant, Newcastle Polytechnic: Lectured in statistics, applied maths, and computing while pursuing research leading to the award of M.Phil for a thesis on the analysis of dopant profiles in semi-conductor materials.
